How Often Should You Service Your RO Water Purifier? (Bangalore Guide)

1. External Pre-Filter (Spun Polypropylene Cartridge): Every 3 to 4 Months
The external bowl filter sitting on your wall is your purifier's first line of defense. In Bangalore, construction dust and pipeline rust choke this 5-micron spun candle rapidly.
If the bowl looks dark brown or black, water inlet pressure drops sharply. This forces your internal booster pump to strain and overheat. Replacing this cartridge every 90 to 120 days doubles the lifespan of your internal sediment and carbon filters.
- Cauvery municipal water: Change every 4 to 6 months
- Tanker or borewell water: Inspect every 60 days, change by 90 days
- Visible brown sludge or reduced flow indicates immediate replacement
2. Internal Sediment & Activated Carbon Blocks: Every 8 to 12 Months
Inside your Kent, Aquaguard, Pureit, or AO Smith cabinet are two crucial cylinders: the inline sediment filter and the activated carbon block. The carbon block absorbs chlorine, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds that give water a chemical or metallic aftertaste.
More importantly, active chlorine tears through delicate polyamide RO membranes. When the pre-carbon filter saturates after 10–12 months, free chlorine passes directly onto the membrane, causing irreversible failure.
3. Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane: Every 18 to 24 Months
The RO membrane is the core engine of your water purifier, featuring microscopic pores sized at 0.0001 microns. In high-TDS neighborhoods like Horamavu, Mahadevapura, and Kadugodi where dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates exceed 900 ppm, membranes suffer from mineral scaling.
Regular flushing and prompt pre-filter maintenance will help a genuine 75 GPD or 80 GPD membrane last 2 full years. If output TDS spikes above 150 ppm or rejection falls below 85%, membrane replacement is mandatory.
4. Post-Carbon, UV Lamp, and Mineral Alkaline Cartridges
Post-carbon polishers and alkaline mineralization cartridges (like Kent's Mineral RO or AO Smith's MIN-TECH) replenish essential electrolytes like calcium and magnesium, elevating the pH to a healthy 7.5–8.2.
These should be refreshed annually. UV sterilizer lamps should also be checked every 12 months; even if the lamp illuminates, UV-C germicidal output degrades over 8,000 running hours.
- Test UV lamp ballast and quartz sleeve for limescale deposits
- Ensure alkaline filter keeps output pH between 7.2 and 8.0
- Replace post-carbon filter to remove stale water odors from the storage tank
